According to a recent report by the Illinois Community College Board, community colleges account for 60 percent of all undergraduate students enrolled in Illinois higher education. As the primary provider of the higher education experience in Illinois, it is vital for community colleges like Heartland to enrich out-of-classroom learning experiences through student life and student activities. This charge will be more adequately addressed with the addition of a Student Center, which will extend north of the current Student Commons Building. Heartland’s Student Center will provide 43,400 square feet of student space, which will house:

• A larger bookstore
• Space for student activities such as student clubs and organizations
• Expanded Café dining options
• A computer and video gaming area
• A multi-purpose room for viewing movies or other educational programs
• Collaborative space for students
