Growth The mission of Heartland Community College is to provide access to higher education and excellence in teaching and learning. To that end, the College exists to serve any student who can benefit from the College’s programming. In order to meet the increasing needs of a growing community, additional and enhanced space is needed. More than 90 percent of the space provided by the College Development Plan will house facilities related to instruction. In addition, it may help to know: - Heartland Community College currently serves more than 200,000 people over 1,863 square miles (District #540). Research estimates indicate that by 2015, the district population will increase eight percent to 215,000, and that the College can expect an additional 50 percent increase in enrollment as it matures.
- According to the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB), nearly one out of every 11 Illinois citizens attends an Illinois community college. As more people choose to attend their local community college, responsible institutions must anticipate the future needs of their community residents.
- Heartland Community College provides programs in community and corporate education and offered over 900 sections of these courses in Fiscal Year 2007, FY07 (July 1, 2006-June 30, 2007)—more than any other central Illinois community college . According to a recent ICCB report, more than 8,600 community members took part in those offerings. The College Development Plan will provide meeting spaces and an auditorium in the Community Education Center, allowing even more residents and businesses to benefit from these programs.
- Community colleges offer training in over 300 different careers/occupations.* Heartland Community College prepares students for success in life by providing career and technical education. In order to successfully prepare students for the careers of their choices, the College must be able to offer additional classroom space for new and developing programs.
- According to the Illinois Community College Board, business and industry training centers at Illinois community colleges served over 5,000 businesses and trained more than 95,000 employees in FY07. Additional space will increase Heartland’s corporate training facilities, cultivating additional community success and driving the economic development of the region.
- Locally, Heartland Community College’s Corporate Education program served more than 50 local companies and trained more than 2,800 employees in FY07.
Heartland intends to continue its commitment to maintaining a quality institution for its district. This often means delivering new programs and adapting to the changing needs of populations, students, parents, and other education providers as well as organizations and businesses.
